Maintaining your acquired rights or returning to practice
Acquired rights consist in the possibility of obtaining, within 12 months following the revocation of one’s licence, the issuance of a same-category licence without having to successfully complete a recognized basic training program and pass an OACIQ certification examination.
If your broker licence has been revoked for less than 12 months, you must choose any of the following options before the end of your acquired rights period to avoid losing them.
Your licence has been revoked since April 30, 2023. Therefore, two options are available to you:
Option 1: Apply for a licence to return to practice: you have until April 23, 2024 to meet your application processing deadline.
Option 2: Maintain your acquired rights for next year: you have until Tuesday, April 30, 2024 to do so, no applications will be processed after this date.
OPTION 1: LICENCE ISSUANCE
If you wish to return to practice, you must obtain a real estate brokerage licence for the month of April. For this purpose, the first step is to ensure that you meet the requirements of the Mandatory Continuing Education Program (MCEP) for the training cycles that were in effect during your acquired rights period:
- If your acquired rights period started AFTER April 30, 2021, visit this page on synbad.com for information about the 2021-2023 cycle.
- If your acquired rights period started BEFORE April 30, 2021, visit this page for details about the Refresher Training Program.
As soon as the MCEP’s requirements have been met, you must:
- Complete, sign and send the Application for issuance – Real estate broker licence (pdf) form to the Certification Department at certification@oaciq.com, along with the applicable fees BEFORE April 21, 2023. Any applications received after this date will not be processed in a timely manner, especially due to criminal record check delays. In addition, a delay could incur additional costs;
- Provide a photograph taken within less than 6 months;
- Complete, if applicable, the Form to be completed in case of conviction • Penal offence and criminal act;
- Complete, if applicable, the Form to be completed in case of conviction • Ethical offence;
- Complete, if applicable, the Form to be completed in case of bankruptcy.
OPTION 2: MAINTENANCE OF ACQUIRED RIGHTS

IMPORTANT: To renew your acquired rights, you must ensure that you meet the regulatory obligations to keep your file up to date, if applicable, pay any other sums owed to the OACIQ and complete any training imposed or given as a result of an undertaking.
In the days following your online payment, you may access the receipt confirming that your acquired rights are maintained for a 12-month period directly in My record on synbad.com.
If you don’t use the online payment option, you must complete and send the Licence application for the maintenance of acquired rights to the Certification Department at certification@oaciq.com no later than April 30 of the current year, along with the applicable fees of $423.11 (taxes included). You must make sure that the application is complete and duly signed. Once your application is processed, you will receive an email confirming that your acquired rights are maintained for a 12-month period. Please note that it is no longer possible to pay in person at our head office.
You may also access it via My record on synbad.com. Follow the steps below:
- Log in to synbad.com (if you forgot your password, use the Forgot password?” function) to access My record;
- Go to the Maintenance of acquired rights section;
- Click Start!
Please remember that during the acquired rights maintenance period, your licence is maintained in the "Revoked with acquired rights" status. It is therefore prohibited to engage in any form of real estate brokerage activities.
While maintaining your acquired rights, you must keep in mind that when you wish to return to practice and get your real estate brokerage licence, you will need to earn all the required CEUs covering your acquired rights period. This is why during this period, you will retain your access to the Professional Development Portal to complete the training courses required under the MCEP.
You may also contact us by telephone at 450-462-9800 (toll-free: 1-800-440-7170), making sure to select the option specific to the renewal of acquired rights in the telephone menu.
